Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte lashed out at United Nation Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) commander Lt. Gen. Singh Singha over the issue involving the standoff between Syrian rebels and Filipino peacekeepers in Golan Heights.
In his weekly television program, Duterte said Singha should be shot in the head for calling Filipino troops “cowards” after they defied an alleged order to surrender to the Syrian rebels during a standoff last August 28.
“I am offended… Kapag nakita nyo yung UN general barilin nyo sa ulo. Sabihin nyo request ni Mayor Duterte,” the mayor said.
”Filipino soldiers are not obliged to kill for any country except your own,” he added.
Ok, that was a good one Mr. Mayor. Once again, you have broken the “Cardinal Rule” of politics and of being a public official.
You publically wished someone dead.
For the last few years, I have had a kind of childish respect for you. Mostly due to your anti-crime efforts in Davao, where you are their current — and apparently much-loved — mayor. By announcing “If you are a member of a syndicate and are deemed a threat to the well being of the people. You will be targeted for assassination.” You and your little DDS (Davao Death Squad) have managed to seriously clean up the criminal element in and around your vast municipality.
Now some would see the idea of “Death squads” as taking the law into their own hands at the most extreme of levels. Interestingly enough, to do so you had adopted a form of California’s “3-strikes and you’re out” law. What this means for California is, if you have committed a similar offense 3 times or more, you will be tagged as an incurable “repeat offender” and imprisoned for the rest of your life.
But you sir? You took it one step further. If someone is found to be a 3-timer in your area, they literally are taken out. Permanently!
Which leads me back to your recent statement against Lt. Gen. Singh Singha. To publically state he “should be shot in the head” is about as ridiculous as one could get. You are the mayor of a city, within a nation, that is part of the UN itself. Not only have you embarrassed yourself. You have embarrassed the nation as a whole.
And now there are people calling for you to run for the Presidency in 2016? Sorry son. But no sale. Your little vigilante style of business may work at a local level. But the last thing the Philippines and its people need is your funny little death squads running around all over the place, dishing out your brand of justice.
I think it would be in your best interests — and everyone else — if you simply disappeared from public view for a while, and went back to taking care of Davao. Leave International Diplomacy and caring for the rest of the nation to those at a higher level. Which, when you think about it, isn’t much better.
