A Filipino Explains The Filipino

charlie-utter-avatarThe following is a comment our site received recently, which hit a few points with me. So much so. I decided to make it an article. While the writer makes a few points (combined with the expected insults) towards our recent story regarding the economic collapse here. What caught my interest above all else. Was his insistence of speaking for every Filipino out there, as if he knew what everyone wanted. So go ahead and read it for yourselves. And then I shall give my closing argument. Enjoy:

Thank you for such an insightful article. Though I agree with most of your observations, I do not agree that a collapse is inevitable. Also your tone is bit arrogant which is common for foreigners like yourself who think they know everything just because they come from the west.

Sure you may know about economics, but you clearly know nothing of the Filipinos and the Philippines. Living here has done nothing but make you sound like a twat who couldn’t make it in his own shitty country.

In any case, if the economy does collapse, do you think 95 percent of the country will care? Sure the rich may forgo the luxury car upgrade, God forbid actually have to sell off some assets, but the vast majority will be just fine.

You know why? Because for one we’re a resilient bunch. We’re a stubborn and stupid lot, but we survive. We’ve been ruled by mostly idiots starting with the Spanish and then taken up a notch by the Americans (we’re are still suffering from the sheer idiocy that you imparted on us– American style law and democracy), we have the worst traffic (in the cities), the slowest internet (which doesn’t stop us from breaking twitter records), no infrastructure/highest electricity (I.e. No nuclear plants, no fluoride in our drinking water), and not many factories (that further pollution, consumption and poor work conditions), not to mention the worst storms in the world. But we’ve weathered them and will continue to do so. Yes it’s a lot of suffering, but it’s this suffering that has made us tougher and more connected. So tough that we’re willing to live away from our families and our homes just so we can earn a little more and put family through school.

But for the sake of argument, let’s say we’re not tough enough to weather Another (wouldn’t be the first in my lifetime and I’m just 30) economic collapse. You still forgot that the sheer majority of Filipinos are daily wage earners. The masses don’t own any of the big companies. We don’t invest in index funds, or have portfolios. We don’t even keep that much in banks. We are mostly simple people, who are happy to have enough.

Squatter GarbageSo yes, you may be right about an economic collapse. But the great majority of us care very little. If anything an economic collapse would rid of us of the filth that you foreigners have brought to our lands. Take the foreign companies and factories away and I’ll even give you the government for free. We’ll just go back to the agricultural economy that we were and should always have been if not for Western “civilisation and progress”. You see we never really needed you guys or your money. We have all the rich food producing land we need to survive while you keep writing stuff like this as if our lives were ending when in truth, it’s only you that’s afraid. You’re afraid that your cushy Western life in the tropics is over. No more beautiful women, good beer, great beaches, and year round warm weather.

I do sincerely want to thank you though. It’s this condescending tone foreigners take up with us talking about our own land that needs to be broadcast all over the Philippines, because it’s this kind of stuff that unites us. It’s these kinds of articles they make me want to reply.

With that, I hope I’ve helped you understand Filipinos a bit better. We’re sensitive and defensive when it comes to something we deeply love. Now, when did you say you were leaving?

So what have you learned folks? Do you agree with his claims that you are all a resilient bunch? Maybe so? But let’s touch on a few of the key points he highlighted. And let’s take a closer look at what he said at the same time?

  1. We’re a stubborn and stupid lot, but we survive. – He admits to his people being stupid. But blames the colonizers or ruling classes for that.
  2. We have the worst traffic. – Claims this only occurs in the cities. When my personal, nationwide experience has engulfed me in some of the worst driving techniques known to man. Which brings us back to the stupidity claim.
  3. The slowest Internet. – You all know (and complain) about the horrid services supplied by your Telco’s. Yet he is more concerned with reminding the readers of the importance of Twitter records. As if that’s going to fix your voice/data shitbox.
  4. No infrastructure/highest electricity. – He claims no nuclear power plants. What about BNPP sitting there, unused for 30 years now? And why admit the water is sub-standard, due to the absence of fluoride?
  5. Not many factories. – Your nation was a lot more industrialized in the past. Than it has been post EDSA. And who’s fault has that been? Certainly not anyone from the outside.
  6. The worst storms in the world. – He stated you have weathered them. And will continue doing so. Of course you will. But does that mean, as a people, 4+ million of you should still be suffering in some way. Because your government has ignored your well being for the last 2 years? I think not.

And now. Last but not least. The cherry on the cake of his silliness. The two items I am sure most of you might find a bit strange.

  • We’ll just go back to the agricultural economy that we were. – In his arrogance. He is actually claiming you’d have all been better off if no outsiders had ever showed up? As if the Philippines, being the heart of Asia, would have been completely bypassed throughout history? And where is all this “rich food production” he claims exists? If so. Why then, have you been importing rice as if it’s going out of style? Weren’t you a rice self sufficient nation in the 1970’s?
  • We never really needed you guys or your money. – Really now? If we’d known you all felt that way to begin with. We never would have stopped by in the first place. Maybe we should have invested in Thailand. Malaysia, Indonesia and Vietnam sooner. At least they have a true, open door, free trade policy when it comes to FDI. Unlike your arrogant, self serving “Filipino first” 60/40 ownership guidelines. Which is the very reason no major players will ever come here. And that is exactly why there are no jobs here.

But that’s another story, in and of itself now. Isn’t it?

Just a regular "Joe" who decided the rat-race in the states was getting to ridiculous for words, and made the move to the Asian side of life.

  1. Oh man, the Filipino writer must be high on better drugs than I’ve ever seen in order to write that drivel. In fact it is so stupid that I will copy the entire article and answer some of the more retarded points in ALL CAPS BECAUSE I CANNOT USE COLORS OR SOME OTHER WAY TO DISTINGUISH MY THOUGHTS FROM HIS.

Thank you for such an insightful article. Though I agree with most of your observations, I do not agree that a collapse is inevitable. Also your tone is bit arrogant which is common for foreigners like yourself who think they know everything just because they come from the west. BECAUSE WE COME FROM THE WEST HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH IT. FOR ONE THING THE LARGEST GROUP OF FOREIGNERS HERE ARE KOREANS & THEN JAPANESE (NEITHER OF WHICH ARE WESTERN COUNTRIES). http://en.wikipilipinas.org/index.php?title=Top_Ten_Foreign_Visitors_in_the_Philippines

Sure you may know about economics, but you clearly know nothing of the Filipinos and the Philippines. WE KNOW YOU ARE UNEDUCATED AND ONION SKINNED. Living here has done nothing but make you sound like a twat who couldn’t make it in his own shitty country. I SPEAK ONLY FOR MYSELF WHEN I SAY THAT I ACTUALLY COULD LIVE BETTER IN AMERICA ON ONLY MY SSA CHECK WHICH IS NOT VERY LARGE. I WOULD LIVE IN A RENT SUBSIDIZED, FURNISHED APARTMENT WITH SUBSIDIZED ELECTRIC AND HEAT. I WOULD PAY LESS FOR INTERNET 10 TIMES FASTER THAN WHAT I GET HERE. I COULD GO HUNTING AND FISHING BECAUSE WE HAVE NOT KILLED EVERY WILD BIRD AND ANIMAL IN THE COUNTRY, NOR HAVE WE MADE THE WATER SO POLLUTED THAT IT IS UNSAFE TO EVEN TOUCH THE FISHING GEAR.

In any case, if the economy does collapse, do you think 95 percent of the country will care? THE 95% ARE ALREADY IN POVERTY SO THEY WILL EXPERIENCE NO CHANGE UNLESS THE MALLS WITH A/C CLOSE. Sure the rich may forgo the luxury car upgrade, God forbid actually have to sell off some assets, but the vast majority will be just fine.

You know why? Because for one we’re a resilient bunch. We’re a stubborn and stupid lot, SO ARE COCKROACHES AND CRABS but we survive. We’ve been ruled by mostly idiots starting with the Spanish and then taken up a notch by the Americans (we’re are still suffering from the sheer idiocy that you imparted on us– American style law and democracy), YOU FLIPS ARE THE ONES WHO CREATED A CONSTITUTION THAT MANDATES NO POLITICAL FAMILY DYNASTIES YET FORGOT TO MAKE ANY IMPLEMENTING LAWS. YOU ALSO MADATE FREE EDUCATION FOR ALL CHILDREN YET MAKE IT TOO EXPENSIVE TO GET BACK AND FORTH WHILE ALSO PROVIDING NOT ENOUGH SCHOOLS. we have the worst traffic (in the cities), YOU HAVE THE WORST DRIVERS IN THE WORLD WITH THE POSSIBLE EXCEPTION OF SAUDI ARABIA. the slowest internet (which doesn’t stop us from breaking twitter records), no infrastructure/highest electricity (I.e. No nuclear plants, YOU STARTED TO BUILD ONE IN BATAAN BUT RIGHT ON TOP OF A MAJOR FAULT LINE WHICH WOULD BE A DISASTER IF THE THING WENT OPERATIONAL AND AN EARTHQUAKE HAPPENED THERE. no fluoride in our drinking water), and not many factories BUILD SOME NEW, CLEAN OPERATING FACTORIES THEN. THERE IS NO EXCUSE FOR NOT HAVING FACTORIES. THEY CAN BE BUILT TO OPERATE IN A CLEAN MANNER IF YOU JUST USE YOUR PIHN HEAD BRAINS AND FOLLOW THE LEAD OF AMERICA, JAPAN AND KOREA (that further pollution, consumption and poor work conditions) POOR WORK CONDITIONS CAN BE AVOIDED IF THE COMPANIES OPERATE IN A PROPER MANNER, not to mention the worst storms in the world. But we’ve weathered them and will continue to do so. Yes it’s a lot of suffering, but it’s this suffering that has made us tougher and more connected. YOU ARE “CONNECTED” BY YOUR NEEDLESS SUFFERING WHEN YOU ALLOW YOUR GOVERNMENT TO CHEAT YOU OF THE DISASTER RELIEF SENT FROM THE WEST YOU SO DESPISE YOU FREAKING NIMROD!!! So tough that we’re willing to live away from our families and our homes just so we can earn a little more and put family through school. YOU HAVE TO LIVE ABROAD BECAUSE YOU ARE TOO LAZY AND STUPID TO BUILD THOSE FACTORIES MENTIONED BEFORE.

But for the sake of argument, let’s say we’re not tough enough to weather Another (wouldn’t be the first in my lifetime and I’m just 30) economic collapse. You still forgot that the sheer majority of Filipinos are daily wage earners. MY EDUCATED GUESS IS THAT LESS THAN 30% OF WORKAGE PEOPLE ACTUALLY HAVE JOBS. The masses don’t own any of the big companies. We don’t invest in index funds, or have portfolios. We don’t even keep that much in banks. We are mostly simple (SIMPLE AS IN SIMPLE MINDED OR STUPID) people, who are happy to have enough.

Squatter GarbageSo (LEARN THAT THE LITTLE RED LINES MEAN YOU HAVE A SPELLING ERROR BEFORE SENDING YOUR ARTICLE OUT, ALSO LEARN TO CAPITALIZE THE FIRST WORD OF A SENTENCE) yes, you may be right about an economic collapse. But the great majority of us care very little. THIS IS SOMETHING TO BE PROUD OF??? If anything an economic collapse would rid of us of the filth that you foreigners have brought to our lands I HAVE PERSONALLY BEEN HEREE FOR 12 YEARS AND HAVE NEVER SEEN A FOREIGNER THROW TRASH ON THE STREETS. IT IS YOUR OWN ASSHOLE FLIP PEOPLE WHO THROW THE TRASH ON THE STREETS & IN THE WATERWAYS. Take the foreign companies and factories away and I’ll even give you the government for free. We’ll just go back to the agricultural economy that we were and should always have been if not for Western “civilisation (SPELLING ERROR PRECEDES THIS) and progress”.

MAYBE IF YOU LISTENED TO WHAT WE SAID INSTEAD OF JUST BITCHING AT US YOU MIGHT LEARN A FEW THINGS AND FIX YOUR SHITHOLE SEWER OF A COUNTRY!!!

With that, I hope I’ve helped you understand Filipinos a bit better. We’re sensitive and defensive (BEING ONION SKINNED IS NOT A POSITIVE ATTRIBUTE) when it comes to something we deeply love. Now, when did you say you were leaving? IF I WERE TO LEAVE WOULD YOU SUPPORT THE 10 ~ 12 PEOPLE I SUPPORT IN ADDITION TO MYSELF?

  2. First of all thank you for making my comment into a post. I’m going to be popular! I’m just kidding.

As a way of saying thank you, I’ll keep this banter up. I agree with some of your points but You’ve misunderstood some of mine so I shall clarify them.

Before I start though could you answer this? Why is it so hard for a lot of you foreigners to admit that you are wrong? You’re talking to a Filipino born, and bred in the Philippines about Filipinos. If you just listened and maybe asked why I have these opinions instead of disparaging them right away then you may stand to learn something.

    Having said that, here goes.

    1. Yes I do admit Filipinos are stupid. Not all but a great number. But I’ve seen it get better. We’ve been dumbed down by the American educational system since you brought the Thomasites a hundred odd years ago. You made rizal, who did not fight for independence but only equal representation in the Spanish Cortez, our national hero. a very shrewd move to quell the revolutionary urge within us for generations to come.

I’m sure a great number of Filipinos would agree with me. You on the other hand should not call us stupid because you are a visitor in our country. If there is something you want to say do so nicely and constructively. As I have said before we are very sensitive and are quick to take offense.

Isn’t the whole of humanity pretty stupid though? I honestly think that it’s those who claim to know everything that we should be worried about. Like you claiming to know everything about economics.

    2. Apologies. I took traffic as the one Manila is most known for, and not the actual driving practices. Yes we drive like crazy here. Get used to it. If you can’t then don’t drive. If you can, then drive and please do educate our other countrymen on road etiquette. It will help us all.

    3. Yes we have horrid Telcos. And yes I would like to remind twitter readers that we broke twitter records despite shitty internet. Why? Because twitter, when used correctly is such a powerful tool. It has helped overthrow dictators and has been the catalyst in the faster dissemination of information all across the globe. Arab spring? Twitter set that off.

The fact that we can do it for Entertainment, goes to show we can do it. Nothing more, nothing less. Where we take this power is completely up to us.

    4. Thank God it wasn’t fired up. Japan messed up theirs. And that’s Japan. Nuclear plants have no place in humanity imo. Yes you get cheap electricity by using them, but if you fuck up the whole world pays. And you never know when you will fuck up.

Why get into nuclear if solar, wind and ocean tide energy is so abundant?

On the flouride, I hope you know it’s been confirmed that flouride is highly carcinogenic especially in large quantities like that found in US drinking water. If you don’t there’s a guardian article floating around somewhere that discusses it.

So yeah that wasn’t an admission of substandard drinking water. We actually have a ton of potable water. So much so that where I live now, water is free of charge.

I’m not so sure about your post edsa data. I’m actually scared were more industrialised now. Japan is pulling out of China to move factories here because Chinese labor has gone up. Bpos didn’t exist pre edsa. So what what industry did we have back then that we don’t have now.

I sincerely hope you are right though. We should be moving away from industrialisation and again going back to agro forestry and an agriculturally based society. I believe it was the westerners who tricked us into “industrialisation” because of the Cheap labor and all. When in truth we have always been an agricultural country and society.

    6. The food production is there. Just go to kalinga and see the thousand year old food production system they have up there in the mountains. If the big foreign buyers of our best crops left, sure we’ll be out of money, but we’ll still have our crops. Now tell me, if we Filipinos stop selling the world our best tuna, our best bananas our best mangoes, will we go hungry? If an industrialised or even a financial based economy like us were to experience an economic collapse how would they fare? Have you guys figured out how to eat money?

    Which brings me to

    6. You show your true colors my friend. Believer in the white man’s burden like so many dumb Americans. You did go to Vietnam, remember? How’d that work out for you? Sending your kids to kill innocent women and children for what? Democracy? Thailand? The only reason they accept you farangs is because they’re too nice and non confrontational as a culture to kick you out. Kind of the same with us. Don’t think of that as weakness though. We’re just naturally easy going in the islands. But if you do step out of line, you will get beaten. I’ve seen it here and Thailand.

You want to talk silliness? To any filipino reading this: get this, for all his hate and disdain for our land, he wants to allow 100 percent ownership of foreigners here in the Philippines. Please tell me why?

Wait never mind. Because there’s money to be made here, it’s an emerging market. It’s easier to exploit people and resources here. Big corps would have a field day! Americans can buy up all the nice beachside property without having to marry a crazy Filipino.

Let’s see, Hawaii is under America. They have huge corporations there like dole and Monsanto. But the what happened? First the islander population was reduced to 10 percent through violence or disease brought on by the colonisers. Then the they claimed their lands for themselves, and brought foreign workers to work the fields (Filipino, Japanese, chinese) because the Hawaiians refused to work under the colonisers terms. Nowadays Hawaiians can’t afford to live on their own land because the prices are too high. They work as maids and drivers in their own soil, can’t buy a house, can’t buy property. Is that what you want for us?

Almost the same thing happened to indo minus the genocide. The Indonesians have been booted out from the best most beautiful places because the land values have gone up so high locals can’t afford it.

You claim to bring progress but your history has been marred by nothing but conquest, exploitation and violence. You say you will give us jobs and money, but you really bring us slavery. We work under your discretion which history proves is shoddy at best. And if we complain, what do you do? Bring in foreign workers who will work for cheaper. Worse? You kill our people. Exactly Like what you are doing to our Lumad brothers. All for corporate interest.

So yes, I would rather die than see foreigners be able to buy and own Filipino land. I would rather be called silly, a loon, or an absolute nut than be subordinate to a foreigner in my own country. I would rather have no money and all of the Philippines than have all the money and none of it. I am Filipino first and foremost and will forever fight for the Filipino.

When I first replied I thought you were pretty smart. I thought maybe he wants to help he just doesn’t know how to word it properly. I even agreed to the things you said. Now that you have shown your cards, I’m forced to think that you’re just like the other slimey foreigner with personal intentions in mind. You don’t love the Philippines. You don’t love it’s people. You just like it because it’s convenient, because there’s maybe money to be made if it got fixed. You are the type of foreigner that we should not welcome here but we’re hospitable to a fault. Maybe even stupid.

In any case, thank you again for this opportunity to air my thoughts. I hope I have furthered your understanding of us Filipinos. Not all of us are as gullible as you think. And More and more of us are waking up to the truth everyday. We’re a complex bunch who fight amongst ourselves a lot but believe you me, we will unite against a common foe if what we love is threatened.

To the Filipinos who read this:

Hindi ko sinasabi na wala tayong mali. Malayo doon.

  3. Yank, so many more things to answer! But since you have devolved to insulting my gramar and spelling of your language I’ll stop replying. Cleary I’ve touched a nerve that makes you immature. Though I am tempted to go the same route I will not.

Please do check your facts though. 12 years here is a short time. Read some history books (not the ones you wrote please) and it may give you a better picture of the truth behind what you think is going on.

Congrats on the 12 people you support. Should we now build you a monument? Haha. Are they of working age? If yes then yes I’ll support them by teaching them how to support themselves so they don’t have to rely on some dirty filthy yank who brags about supporting some Filipinos in the Philippines.

(Please don’t tell me it’s a Filipino wife and her family or else it would be all too cliche. It would explain your disdain for the Filipinos though.)

Do remember that we have been under the thumb of the West since the Spaniards. Granted it won’t be that easy to unlearn the stuff. You were pretty successful at erasing our culture, down to our language and writing.

We’ve been listening to your stupidity for so long it has led us here. Who do you think has run the country all this time? The government? Don’t be a fool. I’m sure you know in this country the government is a joke, so we’ve learned to take care to each other without the government. Just watch heneral luna the movie and it will explain the birth of the so called Philippine government.

But of course being the infallible amurican thay you are, you will probably admit none of the wrong you taught us, and blame it on the natives. So typical of you.

Did the native Americans create the dust bowl the Gulf oil spills and the California drought? What about the wars in Vietnam Korea Iraq Afghanistan and Palestine? That was all the natives fault. Hell if we listened to you I’m sure wed be the best slaves in the world, but we’re growing smarter, and you guys are in for some very tough times.

With that, I say Thank you again for the airtime. It has been fun to put it in writing. I do hope you continue to live in misery here in the Philippines. And should you decide to leave, send me an email and IL help you pack your bags.

    Cheers!

  4. Just for the sake of it, let’s converse in tagalog and let’s see who’s grammar and spelling is better. I’ll even give you a free Pinoy word that aptly describes you to help you out– hindot.

  5. What do you do to people so ignorant they can’t even comprehend the existence of their own ignorance?…. The comment you received obviously knows how to write English, but is someone HUDAS not know economics or political economy. It’s as if the world revolves around and his expectations should be met before anything can take place…… That”s so typical of an IDIOT AQUINO FOLLOWER’s simpleton’s mind.
